Do you have a vivid memory of Aleppo?

“Whew… I couldn’t summarize in a single memory Aleppo, a marriage of many little treasures only perceived by the one who lived there. I remember the jasmine flowers that perfumed the entrance to my building, their delicious nectar greeted me every morning and eventually settled on the lips of the little 7 year old girl that I was…

Amina, an extraordinary woman, known as Amoune to her friends, was our housekeeper. She managed to brighten up our days despite her painful experience. I was her little assistant. I answered to “Stéphanine”, my reinvented name. Dusting the furniture or shelling peas, I was present at her calls, often grumpy, sometimes helpful. I still see her against the light in the kitchen repeating to me that emotional refrain: “benti, sab3 sebyen ou benti (my daughter is worth seven boys)…

The everyday hurry to discover what Abu Musa, the neighborhood grocer, was hiding in his heavy bags led me to jump to the front door when the bell rang… watermelons, apricots, green almonds, mandarins… according to the season, he always promised it was good merchandise!

During love season, in the hochs (yards) next door, the cats in heat chased each other, their shrill wailing waking up the neighbors of their lazy naps of serene afternoons.

Seasonal cleaning of carpets became for me an endless game, sometimes transforming them in tents, sometimes in beds, I was the queen of the carpets’ kingdom!

The Adâne (songs of muezzin) of the afternoon was a refrain that rocked my childhood. The echo of the powerful voice of mouaden (Muezin) echoed through the whole city, plunging it into serenity and into a deafening calm.

At that point, Aleppo was contemplating the sleep of some and the prayers of others.”
